About James Highsmith

Dr. Highsmith is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon who joined FLDSCC in 2024. Dr. Highsmith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of South Florida, a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Florida, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of South Florida. Dr. Highsmith completed his residency in dermatology with New York Medical College, and also completed a coveted fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and procedural dermatology with one of the most renowned Mohs surgeons and respected dermatologists in the world, Dr. Gary Monheit. 

Prior to pursuing a career in dermatology, he was a certified Hillsborough County school teacher, and in 1999 started his journey towards becoming a medical doctor by first completing a physician assistant program in 2002. He found his true calling the following year in the dermatology section of the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital. He has been pursuing, learning, teaching and involved with dermatology ever since. Working at the VA allowed Dr. Highsmith the opportunity to care for our nations’ heroes and publish medical articles as well as teach medical students, PA students, and ultimately inspired him to become a physician. During his doctorate program, Dr. Highsmith was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, graduating near the top of his class. Additionally, he has been published in several peer reviewed journals, written book chapters, and lectured at national meetings. Most recently, he served as the medical director for the Dermatology Surgery Institute in Lutz, FL. 

At FLDSCC, Dr. Highsmith specializes in medical dermatology, Mohs micrographic surgery, surgical reconstruction, neurotoxins, neck contouring, and skin resurfacing. During his fellowship, Dr. Highsmith was able to assist in clinical trials for new neurotoxins and fillers and was among the very first physicians trained to use and administer Kybella in the United States. 

Dr. Highsmith is a native Floridian, born in Tampa. He enjoys spending time with his family and loves to live an active lifestyle with activities such as gardening, jiu-jitsu, and weight training.
